Roy Mills

It is with great sadness that today we have learnt of the passing of a true Regimental icon.

Roy Mills was first and foremost a proud Forester and excellent boxer. Called up for National Service, Roy went to Austria before finding himself with comrades of the Gloucestershire Regiment fighting in Korea.

After his heroics at the Battle of Imjin River, Roy was marched into North Korean captivity. Here he spent almost three hellish years before finally returning to his beloved Cinderford.

Roy Mills was one of the last of a generation of heroes and he will be sorely missed by all who knew him.

By Our Deeds We Are Known.

Herbert (John) Wake

No More Parades/Service Notice: It is my sad duty to inform the passing of SSgt Herbert (John) Wake of the 1st Battalion The Gloucestershire Regiment on the 5th of August 2024 at the age of 96. Hector, as he was known at the Regimental, served from 1956 to 1974 and was a popular soldier with many friends. Sadly Hector has no direct relatives and his final parade would have been very small. However, as news of his passing was circulated we made contact with all those concerned and arranged a full military send-off for Hector in keeping with the traditions of the Gloucestershire Regiment. Both County Chairman will be attending, as well as Rojer Phelps and his trusty bugle for the last post, two standard bearers and the Regimental coffin drape and wreath. All we need now is some additional boots on the ground to make the numbers up. Please can any members of the Regiment who are local and available please attend the funeral service at Weston Super Mare Crematorium on Thursday 22nd August 2024 at 12:30 pm. “by our deeds, we are known”

Stan Gunnell

Please be advised of the passing of Pte Stan Gunnell late Glosters.

Stan served as a national serviceman with the Glosters in February 1951, having completed his basic training Stan was on a merchant Ship as part of a detachment of reinforcements on their way to report to the 1st Battalion who were then fighting in Korea, however, whilst crossing the very rough Bay of Biscay the ships engine packed up. Suffering with acute sea sickness the detachment were rescued by a Tugboat and ferried to Gibraltar. The Consequence of this incident meant that the detachment arrived just too late to take part in the Epic Battle of the Imjin River.

Subsequently Stan went on to serve with the Glosters in Korea & the UK and led a long and happy life. Has he was a keen member of the Severn Branch of the Regimental Association members will carry standards at Stans funeral on the 24th June at 13:30 hrs in Gloucester Crematorium.

Letters of condolences may be sent to his Daughters Maureen Dunn and Alison Harris C/O Goodwins funeral Directors Peter Scott House 2, Heathville Road Gloucester GL1 3DP
